Should You Paint or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets?
September 23, 2018Paint Color Ideas That Look Great in a Master Suite
October 18, 2018Painting a room can change the entire ambiance of that room quickly, but what a lot of people don’t know is that a good paint job can also make a room look bigger, and it is a lot simpler than you might think. Choosing the right colors and the right patterns can make a big difference in the overall look of a particular room, and below are a few ways that a good coat of paint can make any room look larger.
Cool Colors Make a Big Difference
Cooler colors such as light-blue and cream can make a room look bigger in several ways. First of all, cooler colors more easily reflect the light coming through your windows and cause the room to look as though it has more space than it does. Cool colors also add warmth to a room, which immediately makes the room look bigger. Creams, off-whites, mint-green, and icy blues work wonders in making the room look bigger and lighter, changing the look and size of the room so that it feels much more spacious.
All in the Family
When painting a room that you want to look bigger, you can use different colors and shades, but if you use colors from the same family, it can make the area look roomier. Painting the room shades of grey and light-blue, for example, allows the human eye to think the room is bigger than it really is. You can use almost any colors and shades you like, but keeping them in the same color family is the secret to making a room look larger.
Black or White
It may sound like something that won’t work, but painting a room all black or all white can actually make the room look much bigger. An all-white room reflects light, and an all-black room, especially if you accent it with light-colored furniture and wall hangings, automatically opens up the room to make it look more spacious. Add to this the fact that all-black or all-white rooms will match any furniture or decorations you place in the room, and you’ll understand why this is such a popular option for people with small rooms.
Make Sure Your Ceiling is the Right Color
Painting your ceiling a very light color, such as white or off-white, makes the ceiling look like it’s higher, which in turn makes the room look bigger. Extra-high ceilings always open up a room so that it looks larger, and even if you don’t have ceilings that high, painting them white or something light in color will make them look that way anyway.
Go Bright and Bold
Just as light colors expand a room, so do colors that are bold and bright. As long as the color is bright and not muddy-looking, it will open up the room and make it look much bigger. Bright colors do the same thing as lighter colors and colors within the same family; they reflect the light and make the entire room look lighter, brighter, and much bigger.
