May 16, 2019There’s nothing quite like the fresh air of the summer time, the sweet smell of flowers in the yard, the sound of insects, and being able to sit and relax on your deck out in the sunshine. The problem is that it’s been sitting all winter not being used and before you can enjoy it you need to get it ready. How can you best prepare your deck for those long summer nights with friends?
- Clean it Off and Clean it up
Whether your deck is wooden or paved, it’s been sitting out in the winter weather for a while. This means that it’s probably muddy and not looking the best. So, the first thing to do is clean it up.
If you have a pressure washer, you can get rid of most of the dirt, mildew, and mold. Just make sure you don’t put it on the highest setting otherwise you might damage the wood. You can also use regular soap and water and sweep it over with a stiff bristled brush.
- Spruce it up a Little
You’ll probably be spending quite a lot of time out on your deck with friends and family, so why not add some extra color to it just to spruce it up a bit? One great way to do this is to repaint some of the furniture. You can also refinish the wooden deck in a new stain color if it has seen better days, but this will take some extra time and effort to do well.
- Let There Be Light
There’s nothing like sitting out on your deck on a warm summer night with friends and family. One way to add some real ambiance to the area is to install some new lighting.
Consider adding strings of fairy lights to the deck area. Icicle lights are also a good idea. No one ever said that lights like this were only restricted to Christmas time! You can also consider adding some tiki torches to spruce it up.
- Add Some Shade
If you’re in an area where hot summers abound, it’s always a good idea to add some shade to the deck area. Large umbrellas can be purchased at lots of stores and installing sails is also a great and attractive way to guard against sunburn.
- Add Some Plants
By adding some potted plants or hanging plants, you can really create a lovely atmosphere. You can even find some plants that produce a natural insect repellent so that you don’t have to worry about those pesky mosquitoes on summer nights.
- Decorate and Express Yourself
Finally, why not add some decorative elements that really add some sparkle to the place? Apart from potted plants and flowers, you can buy some statues or even fountains to add a real Zen vibe to the place. Whatever you do and however you decide to spruce up the place, just remember that expressing yourself is the key!
